Is masking Aadhaar enough for bank or college submission?

Yes — UIDAI's Masked Aadhaar (last 4 digits visible, first 8 hidden) is officially accepted by most banks, insurers, and educational institutions for KYC purposes. UIDAI introduced the Masked Aadhaar standard specifically so citizens do not need to share their full 12-digit number for routine submissions.

Does this tool work on scanned or image-based Aadhaar PDFs?

Partially. For text-based PDFs (digital Aadhaar downloaded from myAadhaar.uidai.gov.in), the tool auto-detects the 12-digit number. For scanned or photographed Aadhaar cards, auto-detection is not available yet — you can still draw a mask rectangle manually over the number and export the masked file. OCR support for scanned PDFs is planned for a future update.

Why mask only the first 8 digits and keep the last 4?

This follows UIDAI's Masked Aadhaar guideline. The last 4 digits are retained so the recipient can verify the document belongs to the right person, while the first 8 digits — which combined with other data could allow full-number reconstruction — are hidden. UIDAI has mandated this standard for organisations under IRDAI and RBI regulation.
